WoW! Wouter over het Web

In my previous post I wrote an accompanying comment on the cover article I wrote for the leading professional Dutch library magazine. My article sets out to explain how libraries can be active in the area of citation analysis. Ball en Tunger (2006) implied bibliometrics, or citation analysis, as one of the niche markets in which (academic) libraries can play a new role. At Library Wageningen UR we have been active in this field for a number of years already. My article (in Dutch) set out to explain how you can transfer a method developed on scientific grounds, into a viable library practice. It is not only about counting citations in the Web of Science. It is about the interpretation of the results with the help of the Essential Science Indicators.
The article stresses the fact taht Brownie points can be earned for libraries quite easily with this type of work. Where scientists come less and less often to the library, we approach the Staff instead. We ask them whether or not their publication list is correct. We explain them about citations and journal impact factors. We explain them about the effect of their erratic naming behaviour. Or the consequences of changing names after marriages, or divorce…. We are invited at staff meetings to explain our findings. We help scientists to make decisions on the decision in which journal to publish their latest results. We see where they publish and what they publish, we see what is hot and what is not.
Just to name a few examples.
The article is about an area of library innovation. How you can translate a rigorous scientific method into the daily practice. But above all, it is about the opportunities to interact with your scientific staff, your ever so important library patrons.

Ik ben er een sterk voorstander van dat de InformatieProfessional een beter gezicht krijgt op het Web. De remake van de website heeft geresulteerd in een grijze muis. Echte kansen zijn nog lang niet benut. Het is nu mogelijk te reageren op de nieuwsberichten, maar omgevormd tot een blog is nog heel wat anders.
Zo kan ik me ook voorstellen dat de redactie een blog instelt om de keuzes en afwegingen voor de selectie van artikelen in een “ten geleide” verantwoord. Geen kostbare ruimte in het gedrukte blad verspillen maar op het Web het bal openen. Zover is het nog niet. Althans de mededeling dat de IP uitkomt met welke artikelen is heel wat anders dan een redactionele blog.

Daarom bij deze maar eens voor mijn eigen artikel een ten geleide:

De aanleiding voor mijn artikel is een artikel van Ball en Tunger (2006). Hierin worden twee nieuwe markten voor wetenschappelijke bibliotheken geschetst. De eerste zijn bibliometrische analyses, de tweede zijn trend analyses, what is hot en what is not in wetenschappelijke publicaties.

Met de bibliometrische analyses zijn wij in Wageningen al een paar jaar bezig. Hierbij volgen we de methodes zoals die ontwikkeld worden door de citatiegoeroes in Leiden zo nauwgezet mogelijk, alleen dan met de databases die ons in de praktijk ter beschikking staan. Een lijstje maken met scores van citaties kan iedereen die beschikt over Web of Science of Scopus. De analyse een stapje verder tillen is vers twee. De Essential Science Indicators zijn daarbij essentieel. Tot op heden is daarover in de wetenschappelijke praktijk weinig tot niets over geschreven. Een standaard op dit gebied Moed (2005) noemt de hele ESI niet eens. Vandaar dit artikel in een vakblad over de toepassing van een beproefde wetenschappelijke methode en hoe dit te vertalen naar een onderbouwde praktijk toepassing. Daar gaat het met innovatie immers over. Wat dat betreft had ik dit verhaal zo op de OCN 2006 kunnen houden.

Het tweede deel van Ball en Tinger (2006) laat ik buiten beschouwing, omdat wat betreft de trend analyses er nog geen goede methodes zijn om in de praktijk toe te passen. ESI biedt op dit gebied enkele aanknopingspunten, maar de research fronts zijn niet bepaald de sterkste onderdelen van ESI.
Een aardige vraag die rest is natuurlijk wie onze praktijklessen nog meer kunnen volgen? Oftewel wie heeft toegang tot ESI? Naast Wageningen, in elk geval in Groningen, misschien ook Leiden, maar voor de rest moet ik het antwoord schuldig blijven.

Dat mediatheken in het voorgezet onderwijs een blog bijhouden is nog lang niet van alle dag. Tot nu toe wist ik alleen van de blogs van Mediatheek en Mediatheek Bonhoeffer. Trouwens bij Universiteitsbibliotheken zijn blogs nog lang geen algemeen goed, wel zijn er al wat meer universitaire bibliotheekmedewerkers die een blog bijhouden. Mijn cluppie moet nog ontwaken in dat opzicht.
Afijn. De mediatheek van het Christelijk Gymnasium Utrecht heeft sinds juni ook blog. Jurrien lijkt op stoom te komen, zo blijkt over augustus en september. Via een reactie op Moqub kwam ik deze op het spoor.

Zou vanavond over veel dingen willen schrijven die mij verbazen. Dat is uiteindelijk hetgeen mij drijft. Maar dit bericht verbaasde mij in op eerste gezicht wel heel erg. Vervolgens kon ik het wel plaatsen, dacht ik. Althans.
De meeste out of copyright books zijn zeer waarschijnlijk in Europa te vinden. En daar zijn natuurlijk schitterende werken bij die tot op heden nog niet gedigitaliseerd zijn. Google lijkt voor copyrights toch wel wat gevoelig.
Vervolgens is Spaans natuurlijk de tweede taal in de Verenigde Staten, dus waar zou Abraham de mosterd halen?
Logisch stap dus om eens een klassieke Spaanse bibliotheken te digitaliseren.
Nog een tip voor Google. Gooi het ook eens op het Italiaans. De bibliohteek van de Paus lijkt heel veel leuks te herbergen, en staat natuurlijk volop in de belangstelling na de Name of the Rose, of de DaVinci Code.

Wanneer je nu of in de komende vijf dagen Google.be gaat bekijken, voel je op je klompen aan dat daar weer een rechtzaak aan staat te komen.
Wie gaat dat nu lezen?
Wie wil zoiets nu lezen?
Al met al vermoed ik dat de Belgische, ahem, Waalse, pers zichzelf in de vingers snijdt.
Wil je later deze ironische pagina nog een keer zien, ik denk dat er vele kopieën in Flickr terecht komen. Danny Sulivan heeft hem hier gearchiveerd.

Van het weekend viel het mij in Technorati op dat er weer een nieuwe Biblioblog naar mijn blog linkte. BiblioNovaBlog is de blog van de basisbibliotheek Westelijke Mijnstreek. Dat zegt verder niemand ook maar iets. In de volksmond zijn het 18 openbare bibliotheken uit de gemeenten Beek, Echt-Susteren, Sittard-Geleen, Schinnen, Stein die zijn samengegaan. Limburg dus. Meer informatie over die 18 openbare bibliotheken is te vinden op hun website. Alleen jammer dat hun blog (nog?) niet op die site gelinkt is. Een beetje koudwatervrees noem ik dat maar. Er is trouwens wel meer aan te merken over die website, maar dat doet er hier niet toe.
Edwin was de eerste die naar de BiblioNova blog verwees omdat ze een SMS dienst in werking hebben gesteld om de leden te attenderen dat de gereserveerde werken klaar liggen. Mooie dienst.
Zo las ik verder ook nog op de site dat je per 1 oktober gratis reserveringen mag maken. Ook mooi voor de lezers.

Konden we laatst in de verschillende blogs lezen over het eerste Nederlandse bibliobloggers diner. Probeer ik er alweer een van de grond te trekken. Maar ach waarom niet?
Meestal vielen de Surf onderwijsdagen samen met het NVB congres in de Reehorst, maar dit jaar niet. Moqub houdt zich al bezig met het edubloggers diner op 13 november. Laten we daarom maar eens de edu(biblio)bloggers volgen. Die zijn eigenlijk al langer actief met dit soort dingen. De NVB, nu samen met de OCN houdt het jaarlijkse congres de week ervoor, op 7/8 november. Het lijkt mij daarom een aardige aanleiding om ook tijdens het NVB/OCN congres wat te borrelen en te eten met elkaar. Om eens de mensen achter de blogs te ontmoeten.
Voorlopig is de organisatie erg virtueel. Ik ben maar een wiki begonnen om de beschikbaarheid op beide dagen te peilen.
Heb je zin om aan te schuiven tijdens het tweede Nederlandse Bibliobloggers diners maak dan de voorkeur voor een datum bekend op de volgende OCN2006 wiki. Het password om je voorkeur op the geven is: nvb2006 (let op! kleine letters).
Ik hoop vooral dat mensen achter de wat minder bekende biblioblogs me gaan doen. Zoals Mediatheek, BiepMiep, Tureluurs, Twan van Elk of de dames van Mediatheek Bonhoeffer. Schroom niet en doe mee.
Om de opkomst op het tweede bibliobloggers diner tot een succes te maken is het mischien handig wanneer je dit bericht overneemt op je blog of de jouw bekende bibliobloggers hierover informeert. Het zijn er vast meer dan in mijn lijstje, of dat van Ritanila.

A little hurray from Wageningen UR Library!
Scirus has now fully indexed all the free fulltext content from our University repository server. It was on the brink of announcement last month already, but now it is actually working. Our repository, Wageningen Yield, contains a lot more publications than those 7100 indexed currently indexed by Scirus, but the selection by Elsevier/Scirus contains only those that are fulltext freely available. That includes amongst others all electronic theses.
Checking some of its contents, I found the familiar archived articles, but some of the other web results were new to me. Amazing these web results, with these vanity searches. I think Elsevier is brewing gradually and consistently a very fine scholarly web search engine. It will be interesting to keep close tabs on their future development.
Now we only have to wait for one of these official press announcements from Elsevier, that will have a much more significant effects than this blogpost, or our Library newsletter.

This week a fabulous set of journal archives have become availabale from the Royal Society. The oldest journal is the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London which was published from 1665 until 1886. In 1887 this journal was spilt in an A and a B series. They have devoted a special website to conmemorate this special event. On this website attention is devoted to publications by famous scientists such as Watson and Crick on the structure of DNA, or the electricity experiments of Bejamin Franklin from 1751. The complete set of Journals can be found here. Go and have a look it is free until the end of the year.

Update: Most of these journals have been available on JSTOR for quite some time already. Makes you wonder about double work in digitizing journal archives. Anyway LOCKSS in optima forma.

I noticed last Online issue with Péter’s Picks & Pans a few weeks ago already, but since it circulates only on paper in our library it took some time to reach my desk as well.

No worries, it is even better to have some time to see whether or not some things have changed since. Actually I even suspect that this time lag might have operated as an advantage for the pans under consideration. However, not this time. Even Péter was mild in his judgment and that’s exceptional. Péter took aim for Microsoft Live academic, which is sometimes dubbed Windows Live Academic (the naming of Live Academic is still confusing to me).

Péter compared Live academic to Google Scholar. This seems a reasonable comparison, but in the mean time the other big scholarly search engine Scirus was nearly completely forgotten (but not completely). To me though, it seems that these three ‘free’ products are contenders to the throne for scholarly search engines. Fierce competitors with deep pockets to start with. But we should question what a scholarly search engine should look like in the first place before we make one of these engines a successful contender.

Not so long ago we only dealt with catalogues and bibliographies (sometimes dubbed as article indexes) in the academic world. These two type of products were nearly mutually exclusive of each other. The strong point of both types though, is that you could search for formatted information such as title, authors, keywords, publication years and so on. Bibliographies and catalogues only differ in analytical level. Books and journals versus chapters and articles.

With the new kids on the block this whole picture has changed. The information landscape got blurred. One of the first questions we have to ask ourselves when judging these products, is what these new search engines index in the first place. That seems to be an issue that is ever so quickly overlooked. Google Scholar, Scirus and Live Academic all serve as an example of very different indexing strategies. Google Scholar has taken up the holy grail of indexing all scholarly journal information in its entirety. They index all articles from A-Z. From title, abstracts, author keywords, introduction, material & methods, results, and discussion and even including the acknowledgements and references at the end of the articles concerned. It is al there in the Google Scholar index. You can’t necessarily retrieve the fulltext of those articles due to pubishers/copyright limitations, but you are able to identify those articles of interest to you. Inter Library Loan is a good option to get your hands on those articles you really want to get you’r hands on, but you are not entitled to. Google Scholar is not very strong at the classic bibliographic search and retrieval. In Google Scholar ‘2005’ can be either a year or a page number. To Google that doensn’t matter too much since the texts are indexed in its entirety. That is quantum leap away from the classic bibliographic navigation we’re used to.

Scirus, although the oldest of the three, is a mixed product. There is a large sets if journal results (that can be switched off) which is hosted on ScienceDirect, but that is only searchable in the old bibliographic way. Title, authors years and so on. The way librarians like it. Although in the end the number of searchable fields in Scirus is perhaps a touch too limited. Certainly when you compare the search capabilities of Scirus to the ScienceDirect platform itself. That is probably a strategy of Elsevier. On the other hand there is a substantial part of information that is retrieved on the basis of the fullt text information as well. The academic repositories that Scirus is harvesting are on most occasions indexed on basis of their full text. So in that case you are able to find the last statements in the acknowledgments of an article.

The newest kid on the block. Live Academic, had two bold examples of various information retrieval strategies for scholarly information. These could be characterized as moving away from bibliographic searching, indexing the fulltext instead. How disappointing it is though that they have decided to limit their capabilities to indexing the standard bibliographic information only, and not to index the fulltext. On top of that they subsequently made this limited information not properly searchable. There is no fielded searching available, which is ever so important when you have only bibliographic information available.

So I entirely agree with Péter that Microsoft has done a bad job so far. And even though they signed a favourable contract with CrosRef where they have all the information properly organized in the right fields, they still managed to make a mess of it.
So Microsoft get you act together!
Please.
Even in this scholarly world we can do with some ‘serious’ competition.

Some readers might have noticed that the excellent blog on the comparison of Scopus, Web of Science and a little bit on Google Scholar, Oneentry to Research by Lars Iselid from Umeå University Library (Sweden) is no longer being updated. He did a last(?) presentation on that research during the EAHIL 2006 conference on the research project for which he created Oneentry. The good news though, is that he is blogging again. At another blog though. Nowhere North, so go an check it out. It might be worth it.

Ik denk dat ik dagelijks met precies dit onderwerp bezig ben, en met mij een team van collega's. 's Avonds hobby ik er ook nog wat bij op dit gebied. Aardig om te zien dat ze dat nu eens aan mijn Alma Mater gaan onderzoeken. Het is welliswaar een beetje laat, maar beter laat dan nooit.

Via SearchEningeWatch zag ik dat de gepersonaliseerde Google homepage tegenwoordig te verdiepen valt met tabs. Een beetje zoals Netvibes dat doet.
Wat de Amerikanen er niet bij vertelden is dat je daar wel de Engelstalige instelling van Google personal voor moet gebruiken om die tabs te kunen zien. Of in te stellen.
Wanneer je in de Englstalig instelling netjes afgestemd hebt hebt zoals jij dat wilt, werkt dat niet meer vlekkeloos onder de Nl instelling.
Een tweede nadeel wat Google Personal heeft, en wat veel beter in NetVibes werkt, is dat er niet aangegeven wordt wat de nieuwe berichten zijn wanneer je RSS feeds in je pagina opneemt of wat je al gelezen hebt.
Voorlopig dus nog niet helemaal tof.
Wel tof, is dat je je niet hoeft te vermoeien met RSS, of feeds. Je geeft de pagina op en Google instelleert de feed voor je. Da's wel netjes.
Eindoordeel: Google/ig moet maar eens beter gaan (af)kijken bij Netvibes. Netvibes is bij mij in korte tijd de op een na populairste rss-reader bij de lezers van mijn blog mijn blog (40 van de 233). Bloglines is nog steeds onomwonden de nummer 1.

Vandaag kwam het nieuwste issue van D-Lib magazine uit. Het vierde artikel geeft een beschrijving van Computational Science Education Reference Desk (CSERD) een directory vol met vrij toegankelijke bronnen op het gebied van computational science. Het bouwen van modellen en dat soort dingen.
CSERD bestaat uit een catalogus met webbronnen die kunnen worden doorzocht of doorgebladerd. Daarnaast is verzameling resources waar veel onderwijs toepassing, die ontwikkeld zijn door CSERD staf, worden gepresenteerd.
Zo'n bron die je helpt met het orienteren op een nieuw onderwerp, even lekker doorheen bladeren. Eentje om in je lijstjes te zetten.
CSERD wordt gesponsored door NSDL en NSF.
Het artikel van Tanase et al. (2006) gaat over de werkwijze van CSERD. Wel aardig, maar niet echt spectaculair.

Rankings of universities are in fashion. The official citation counters, the gatekeepers of impact measures, abhor this practice. University managers however love these lists, especially when their rankings are favourable. It polishes their esteem, and in the next encounter with their rival rectors of other universities they can impress them with their results. I even have visions of monkey’s on a rock.
Newsweek recently cooked up yet another ranking. They took some ingredients from the Shanghai Jiao Tong University rankings, added a few ingredients from the Times Higher Education Supplement rankings and added the number of library holdings (number of volumes).
Well this last measure, we will put to good use of course when we need to make cuts on our library spending. It is a rather odd measures though. Volumes or records in the library catalogue? But anyway the ranking is there, and we will no doubt get questions about it.
Our University came in on the 61st place. Well below Utrecht (51) but before Leiden (83) and Amsterdam (89). There were no other Dutch Universities in Newsweek’s list.
The rector will be happy.

During the EAHIL 2006 conference in Cluj, Lars Iselid from the Umeå University Library and his excellent blog “one Entry to Research” gave a comprehensive review of his research on the comparison of Scopus, Web of Science and Google Scholar. His powerpoint presentation is available here (Source: Biomedbiblog (in Dutch)).
Readers of Lars’s blog know most of this presentation already, although the coverage of the various source in Scopus and WoS was new to me. An interesting summary of his excellent research.

Nieuwe blogs komen links en rechts als paddestoelen uit de grond, maar soms moet je ook vaststellen dat ze zijn vergaan. WebQuery, van mijn Wageningse collega Peter van Boheemen, werd voor het laatst geüpdatet in de kerstvakantie van vorig jaar. Ondertussen zijn ze op zijn afdeling een eigen wiki begonnen dat hetzelfde soort onderwerpen onder de loep neemt, en die wiki wordt wel regelmatig bijgehouden. Na negen maanden geen updates gezien te hebben dacht ik dat het zo ondertussen wel eens tijd werd. Rest nog dat er 7 trouwe lezers in Bloglines zijn die de feed van WebQuery nog in hun attendering zitten.
Peter, misschien nog een laastste post om afscheid te nemen in stijl?

Trouwe lezers weten het wel, ik neem het nooit zo nauw met de taal. Het is geen desinteresse, maar ik voel me soms wel een beetje gehandicapt wanneer het op taal aankomt. Het taalonderwijs in de beginjaren ’70 heeft daar beslist niet bij geholpen. Toen mocht zo’n beetje alles. Dat gevoel bij taal heb ik nog steeds. Tot grote schrik van menigeen.
Gisterenavond had ik een ervaring met het nakijken van een drukproef voor mijn artikel in de komende IP, die mij achterover deed vallen van verbazing. Er stond in mijn origineel “Deze worden iedere twee maanden in ESI ge-update”. Waarschijnlijk niet helemaal correct, die Engelse leenwoorden blijven nu eenmaal lastig te vervoegen. In de drukproef was dat laatste woord verworden tot geüpdatet. Een semi-Duitse verbastering van een Engels leenwoord! Zo’n U met umlaut. Esthetisch klopt het woordbeeld helemaal niet. Druist dwars tegen alles in. De uitspraak van geüpdatet gaat dan ook helemaal verkeerd. Ik moet meteen aan reünie denken. Het bekt niet meer. Geuuupdeetet.
Ik het nog voorgesteld om er geupdatet van te maken, dat mag zelfs volgens het groene boekje. Maar de redacteuren bij de IP zijn keihard, het moest geüpdatet blijven. Dat is nu eenmaal de voorkeursspelling.
Nu wordt het toch maar eens tijd dat ik ook ga ageren tegen de regels van het Groene Boekje. Ik ben ondertussen wel benieuwd of dit in het Witte Boekje wel smakelijk opgelost wordt. Wij hebben die niet thuis staan, da's toch wel jammer.

Bas haring de welbekende schrijver van onder andere "Kaas en de evolutietheorie" en "De ijzeren wil", maar daarnaast ook wetenschapper/filosoof, televisieprogrammamaker, columnist en verder waarschijnlijk onverstelbaar druk. Die Bas Haring dus, ja die. Die wordt Prof. in Leiden.
Zijn leerstoel heeft een mooie opdracht: "Publiek begrip van wetenschap". Ik vertaal dat voor mezelf meteen met het populariseren van de wetenschap, maar dat is waarschijnlijk fout. Er zal vast ook wel een component in zitten van het opvoeden van het publiek zodat het de wetenschap beter begrijpt. Het zal uiteindelijk van twee kanten moeten komen.
Nu heb ik nog een tip voor Bas, Professor Haring, dus. Je schrijft leuk, getuige je populaire boeken en vele columns, je wilt de wetenschap beter toegankelijk maken, waarom zou je niet eens een blog beginnen?
Leiden heeft een prachtige infrastructuur voor haar werknemers, alleen lijkt het tot op heden nog wat onderbenut. Het lijkt zo logisch om met zo'n leeropdracht op dit gebied een voortrekkers rol te gaan spelen. Natuurlijk weet ik dat je met je volgende televisieserie een podcast gaat aanbieden (niet te linken wegens de flash op http://www.rvu.nl/haring/index.php, derde hokje van boven in de linker kollom). Maar een doorkijkje in de academische wereld. Het vormen van je leerstoelgroep, de kandidaten die je aanneemt, die vragen die langskomen, de twijfel, het dolen, de besluiten. De prachtige artkelen die je uiteindelijk voor iedereen toegankelijk maakt. Kortom de werkelijkheid van het wetenschapsvak. Daar is nog geen Nederlandse blog voor.
Er zijn een paar wetenschappers die bloggen, de meesten vind je in Leiden waaronder: Rino, Robbiano of van der Lubben, daarnaast weet ik nog maar een deeltijd hoogleraar in Twente (ook zo'n druk baasje) die met de hulp van een journalist een weblog bijhoudt. Verder is het stil in het Nederlanse wetenschappelijke bloglandschap.
Kortom Bas, adel verplicht. Geef het voorbeeld!

Tot nu toe zijn er slechts drie openbare bibliothekenin Nederland gecertificeerd. Natuurlijk niet de club waar ik lid van ben. Van het rijtje Hengelo (Ov.), Haarlem en Vlissingen wist ik alleen dat Jan Klerk een fervente biblioblogger is. Kortom Jan, voor jou en natuurlijk de rest van je team mijn felicitaties.
Er is een heel team van kundige(?) mensen bij jullie over vloer geweest. Jullie hebben alles voorbereid, toegelicht, kortom heel wat werk aan de winkel voor zo'n certificaat.
Wat ik me afvraag, of ik dat certificaat straks ook netjes aan de muur gespijkerd zie bij mijn lokale bibliotheek. Of mij verteld gaat worden dat ik lid ben van een goede bibliotheek. Of nog erger, dat ze gezakt zijn voor hun diploma. Ik weet het niet. Ik vraag alleen maar of de leden, we zijn toch nog steeds leden van een bibliotheek? Voldoende geinformeerd worden over dit soort dingen. Bij geen van de bibliohteken zag ik iets op hun website staan. Maar niet minder ongemeend mijn felicitaties voor Jan * en het team dat er achter staat.

Aardige actie van de Zeeuwsche Bibliotheek, die op zijn Zeeuws, Al@din verder promoot door het reclamefilmpje van Al@din op YouTube te plaatsen. Geen cent te veel aan promotie kosten, maar wanneer iedereen dit nu eens in zijn blog overneemt, of bibliotheken op hun website, dan komen toch heel wat mensen dit filmpje tegen.
Jammer dat ze in het filmpje niet aankondigen dat Al@din nu ook met IM, IRC etc te benaderen is. Dat benadrukken we dan in deze stukjes, dan zijn we lekker viraal bezig.
Een beetje viraal, daar houdt Edwin wel van.

Wouldn’t that be a beautiful case to work on.
In my previous life I have worked for a couple of years in Indonesia. My experiences over there, taught me that real development is only possible trough education of the new generations.
So there was this request whether we (as a University), can take part in the development of a set of textbooks for the Global Text Project. They also run a blog.
It is a beautiful illustration of the use of wiki’s the academic environment. It should be encouraged on a world scale. Let’s get rid of the stiff, rigid, difficult to use electronic learning environments. Let’s use open source software and create open content. Let’s wikify the learning of our students and future students!
But we work in universities.
We come down from ivory towers a little, but still desire some control. Perhaps that’s the essence of the academic community and we shouldn’t chance that overnight. So we use wiki’s but will have editors/referees as well. It is the wikipedia with a bend. A good one though, one for controlled quality. The global text project uses wiki software, wikibooks in particular, but works with editors as well. Similar to a systems as OpenWetWare for research (laboratory protocols). The Open Text Project wants to develop into a continuously growing quality controlled textbooks environment.
One question remains though. What can we as a library contribute to such a sympathetic movement. Hosting? Educating teachers? Further developing wikibooks software?
Who has a suggestion?

It was just one of those small sentences “Remember that the period (.) serves as a single-character wildcard in Google” written by a respected hacker that made me wonder once again (Long, 2004). What did I miss this time?
In his example [intitle:index.of], the period can be either a space or any other character. So in the search literature this can better be described as masking rather than wild cards. But that is namepicking. What I really wondered whether this was correct.
The classical library example is of course colour/color or woman/women. So I just searched for one these examples at a single Google data center. [color] gave the most results 924,000,000 and the first results included some graphs as well. [colour] gave 185,000,000 results without the images. [colo.r] however gave only 111,000 results, whereas [colo r] gave 9,380,000 results. The last test [“colo r”] gave again 111,000 results.
So what?What did I learn?
The period is not a wild card in Google as such. When periods are added to the search string, that string will be treated as a "phrase search". Thus [intitle:index.of] gives exactly the same result as [intitle:”index of”]. The period is therefore special on its own. Other character as [colo!r], [colo@r], [colo?r] or [colo*r] all give the same result, and the special characters seems to be completely ignored, they are therefore different from the period (.).
So the period is special. But a wild card?

BTW Long (2004) is interesting reading, not as bad as you might think from this blogpost.

Met de laatste update van Google Maps, wordt het echt leuk om Nederland vanuit de lucht te taggen. Wikimapia was al leuk wanneer je in Rotterdam of omgeving werkte of woonde, maar nu de rest van Nederland ook in hoge resolutie beschikbaar is kan het daar ook toegepast worden.
Ben benieuwd hoeveel bibliotheken er nu in Nederland op de kaart komen te staan.

Yesterday I did a post about satellite and aerial pictures of the Netherlands. Ask used to be the best for aerial images in the Netherlands but Google recently (between 6 and 8 September) updated it’s image database for the Netherlands and is clearly the better source right at this moment. Local.live, has no detailed imagery for the Netherlands yet. But when you live in some parts of England it is Live that is the clear winner over the other two.

For another international comparison I used the construction of the Olympic avenues in Beijing. In Google we get a very detailed view of the Bird nest stadium under construction. However the maps at for Beijing in Google are completely and utterly useless.
Over at Ask, we get only a satellite image with not a lot of detail and the map info is as lousy as Google. Live is not any better than Ask. They have another 2 years (slightly less) before the Olympic Games commence. Still some work left,as tere is in Beijing.

Het was nog niet zo lang geleden dat Ask de betere satelliet- en luchtfoto’s van Nederland toonde. De leiding is echter sinds kort weer overgenomen door Google.

Eric blogde in twee instanties over de kleur van de kussens op de tuinstoelen bij Willem Alexander en Maxima. Die luchtfoto’s van Den Haag of Wassenaar mogen dan niet meer zo duidelijk zijn, bij nadere bestudering blijkt dat over het algemeen alle luchtfoto’s van Nederland in Google verbeterd en geupdate zijn. Toen ik Ask aanraadde als het systeem met de betere luchtfoto’s van Nederland kwam dat omdat er net buiten Wageningen een duidelijke overgang in resolutie bij de foto’s van Google zat. Bij Ask was de dekking toen veel beter. Thans lijkt het er op dat er voor heel Nederland betere luchtfoto’s gebruikt worden in Google. Wanneer ik nu naar het Wageningse plaatje in Google kijk zie ik ook bijvoorbeeld aan de bouw van het Forum en Atlas gebouw dat het foto’s van zeer recente datum zijn. De eerste paal van het Atlasgebouw werd mei 2005 geslagen en op deze foto’s is dat al een verder gevorderde bouwput. Bij ons in de tuin zie ik duidelijk de trampoline staan, die is nu ook net iets meer dan een jaar oud.
Zo hier en daar grazend, vind je hele mooie plaatjes van Nederland vanuit de lucht in deze nieuwe set van Google. Hier en daar is natuurlijk wel een en ander uitgeblokt. Maar over het algemeen verdraaid mooie plaatjes.

It was through the round-up of weblinks devoted to the Ticer 2006 course that I noticed this new Dutch biblioblog. This time however, it is a Dutch biblioblog in English. With his intention on covering library innovation in academic libraries, Driek Heesakkers has certainly caught my attention for sure. So library Spring is here, from Amsterdam of course.
Incidentally, I had seen Steven M. Cohen his post on this new blog, but I didn’t click through to find out that is was a blog from Dutch origin. That error has now been rectified. Driek, amaze us! And share with us your innovations.
One last observation on the Ticer course. Despite the high web 2.0 content of some of the presentations, it is odd to see that only PPT’s were used for presentation. With the only exception of Pierre’s podcasts. Why did nobody use a wiki as a presentation form, and where are the links to those useful lenses.

Bij Edwin had ik het nieuws over Zoekprof al voorbij zien komen, en nu wordt ik door Dymphie uitgedaagd om mijn mening over de vernieuwde zoekprof website te geven. Wat is er aan de hand? Zoekprof, eens gestart door Volkskrant journalist Stielstra, is overgenomen door Vinden.nl. De vormgeving is verbeterd de inhoud echter niet. Eigenlijk staat mijn conclusie al heel bondig geformuleerd in het commentaar op Edwin zijn post.
Zoekprof was ooit een goede website met heel veel nuttige informatie en tips voor het betere zoeken op het Web. Ik vond het zelf een betere site dan Voelspriet. Maar beide sites zijn in verval geraakt. Hoewel Henk van Ess de laatste tijd weer wat actiever lijkt te zijn op Voelspriet, is het niet meer de website of het forum dat het ooit was.
Maar even terug naar Zoekprof. Wanneer ik op de vernieuwde site de achtergrond artikelen even doorblader valt me op dat de meeste in 2002 voor het laatst zijn bijgewerkt, sommige zelfs in 2001 en slechts 1 werd bijgewerkt in 2003. Je hoeft maar hier en daar maar een link te volgen en het werkt niet meer. Niet zo gek, 4 jaar later. Teoma is nu Ask, Zoekhond.nl is er niet meer en ga zo maar door. Toen, in 2002, waren AltaVista en AllTheWeb de toppers wat betreft de mondiale zoekmachines. Nu zijn dat Google, Yahoo! en MSN die de dienst uitmaken. Kortom 4 jaren zijn een eeuwigheid in Webtijd (net iets meer dan een kwart van de leeftijd van het Web). Er is in die tijd teveel gebeurd om slechts met een verfkwast in de vorm van een (weliswaar mooie) cascading style sheet te verdoezelen.
Waar gaat het Vinden.nl dan om om?
Een populair domein, met op het eerste oog betrouwbare informatie, waarin op een hele slinkse manier de Google Adsense reclames zijn verwerkt. Kijk maar eens naar de rechter kant van de pagina’s. Eerst een kopje met handige links, en vervolgens in exact dezelfde style Adsense advertenties eronder, zonder te vermelden dat het advertenties zijn. Vraag me af of dat van Google wel zo mag. Ik zie het als klinkklare spam.
Kortom geen woorden meer aan besteden.

Librarylingo heeft een goed verslag van de discussieavond in de Rode Hoed over de toekomst van de (openbare)bibliotheek op haar blog geplaatst. Beslist de moeite waard!
Moqub zal ook nog wel met een verslag komen. Ik kijk er naar uit.

Grrrrrrr!

I had a good laugh this afternoon correcting some information literacy exams. In one of the exercises they had to look up a book in our union catalogue, note down the library wehere they could borrow the book, and the call number where the book was shelved.
Yes, of course some went through the hassle of finding the correct telephone number for that library. Those answers deserved some brownie points of course!
I bet you, it would work as well with some of the libraries in our network. Just give them a call and tell'm that you would come over to borrow that book. It will be there at the lendingdesk when you arrive. Customer satisfaction we call that.

And yes we have to adjust our ELO to address this misunderstanding.

The Early View Effect may reveal the positive effect of pre-print archives upon the speed of information processing, and seems to raise a journal’s impact factor based on citation counts.

The Centre for Science and Technology Studies (CWTS) is the home of the citation gurus in the Netherlands. They just allowed us a small peek into their kitchen. What they have studied will be used in the end to evaluate scientists, research groups, complete institutes or whole countries on the basis of quantified scientific impact. So we better watch them carefully. It is perhaps the only Dutch group that makes a substantial contribution to the Library and Information Science (LIS) arena. That is when you account the field of bibliometrics, scientometrics or webometrics to the LIS field as well. If you agree on that stance, I should mention Loet Leydesdorff as well. The other significant single contributor to the LIS field from the Netherlands. However, this is all mere guessing, gut feeling, intuition or whatever. There is no data in my possession to substantiate these claims. Perhaps an idea for another posting.

Henk F. Moed, recently published a paper on the research that is being carried out by CWTS and its staff at this moment. Three areas of research were highlighted. Ranking of world universities. Effect of bibliometric evaluations on researchers and journals and at last the influens of OA/OAI on citation impact. Reading this short article, you wish to see the full results at once. You know they have some results already in Leiden. Come on CWTS, hurry up.

In the area of university rankings it will be interesting to watch what they will have to offer on top of what is already known from the rankings by CEST, The Times Higher Education Supplement (registration required) or the Shanghai Jiao Tong University. The latter ranking has been criticized severely already by CWTS (van Raan, 2005). Despite the criticism the Jiao Tong rankings are popular. Perhaps it's simplicity is an explanation. Interesting to see that van raan is going to deliver a paper on this subject in Shanghai.

The second subject raised in the paper by Moed are the reactions of researchers and journals editors alike on the increased pressure by quantitative evaluations. Moed indicates that they identified three types of reactions by scientists based on studies of the UK Reasearch Assesment Exercises. What these reactions of authors were is not further substantiated. What a pity! A bit more insight is given for journal practices (the paper in itself, as a conference contribution published in a single journal issue is perhaps a good illustration of some of these practices). Mannino (2005) or the PLOS editorial (2006) are one of those articles that illustrate the points that Moed should make terrifically.

What interested me most, though is the Open Access part of the article (this article is currently freely accessible). Despite my previous message that OA(I) evidence for increased impact has been pilling up, Moed (2006) is less optimistic. The advantage is analyzed carefully, there is a positive early view effect, there is a positive self selection effect, but the remaining truly OA effect is negligible. Perhaps he should study Harnad’s work more carefully, since he has always proclaimed the early view effect as an important effect and as a result the speeding up of the scientific discourse. We have to await their further studies though.

Most interesting to note is that such a thin contribution to a conference results in an article in peer reviewed journal. It therefore illustrates one of those editorial policies of filling their journals when proper copy is lacking, and impact point are easily collected.

A suggestion for CWTS? Webometrics? Thellwall seems to be leading the pack in this field. CWTS should follow this direction as well.

Sinds gisteren is er weer een medische Biblioblog en tevens een Groningse blog erbij gekomen. Joan Woudsma is bibliothecaris van de bibliotheek in het Martini Ziekehuis van Groningen. Zijn eerste post met de officieële aankondiging is nu on-line. Mooi is dat hij ook een Meebo IM tool op zijn pagina geinstalleerd heeft. Dat komen we nog niet veel tegen op de biblioblogs.
