Geen goede beurt van RWW over Netvibes
Normaal gesproken is RWW een gezaghebbende en betrouwbare bron voor ontwikkelingen op het Web. Web 2.0 dus. Ik vind het zelf fijner om te volgen dan TechCrunch.
Afgelopen vrijdag beging Marshall Kirkpatrick van RWW echter een uitgelijder over Netvibes. In zijn artikel schakelt hij meteen door van te veel downtime bij Netvibes naar problemen bij het Franse moederbedrijf om van Netvibes een goed winstgevend product te maken. Echt onderbouwen doet hij zijn argumenten niet.
In de commentaren wordt ook door de CEO van Netvibes gereageerd, en uitgelegd waar precies de problemen zitten en wordt er krachtig ontkend dat er financiële problemen rondom het product zijn. Sterker nog er wordt overtuigend getwijfeld aan de originaliteit van de post, die eerder op 9 januari al voorgekookt lijkt.
Ik denk dat naar aanleiding van dat commentaar er een update in het originele artikel van Kirkptrick is geschreven, maar de toon daarvan is niet evht bemoedigend.
Wat ik nog wel oppikte was de prachtige Netvibes site van de Dublin City Council Library. Eigenlijk is hun Netvibes site mooier geworden dan hun eigen website, en laat het uitstekend zien hoe lokaal nieuws, Hun Google calender, hun Flickr site en Delicious bookmarks in een website aangeboden kunnen worden.
Oh, ja, en Netvibes werkte vanochtend gewoon weer.
Update: Marshall Kirkpatrick biedt zijn excuses aan. Een beetje als een boer met kiespijn, zeker wanneer je de laatste alinea's leest.

Een netvibes universe voor een bibliotheek
Er zijn in bibliotheekland veel Netvibes gebruikers. Dat concludeer ik op basis van de kleine 1000 RSS abonnees van dit blog waarvan er ruim 500 netvibes blijken te gebruiken. Met Netvibes kunnen mooie dingen gedaan worden. De (jarige!) ZBdigitaal post daar zeer regelmatig over. Een heel mooi voorbeeld van die Universes zijn nog altijd die van Eenvandaag of de VPRO.
Voor de medische bibliotheek van het AZG heeft Guus van den Brekel een Netvibes universum gebouwd, maar verder zijn Netvibes universums voor bibliotheken schaars goed. Nu kondigt de University of Pennsylvania (niet te verwarren met de grote broer Penn State) de ontwikkeling van een PennVibes aan. Pennvibes is geinspireerd op Netvibes, iGoogle en Pageflakes. De sessie van de presentatie werd geblogd door SciLib.
PennVibes komt van de makers van PennTags.
Dat belooft wat!

The real top 5 RSS readers at this moment
Since Feedburner started to report the Google reader and Personal Google feed subscribers on Feedburder syndicated feeds, there have been many posts on feed statistics. Of course on this blog but also here, here or here.
The most interesting post related to this subject appeared today on the Feedburner blog "Burning Questions" itself. They give a fairly comprehensive overview of the most popular webbased feedreaders. myYahoo as measured by clickthroughs seems to be the most popular (but they only syndicate headlines). This is followed by Google, Bloglines and Netvibes. When measured by views Google Reader, Bloglines, NewsGator and Netvibes, in taht order, account for 98% of all views. Google by far and large the most popular.
The numbers reported here are a bit in contrast with a fairly recent post by Hitwise. Hitwise measure something altogether different, they measure web traffic. For webbased readers however, you'd expect some correlation. But on january 18th Bloglines was by and far the most popular webbased reader in the USA, according to Hitwise. LeeAnn Prescott writes "Google Reader has grown lately, but as of the week ending 1/13/07, it had only 1/13 of the market share of visits of Bloglines."
I can't believe Google Reader makes up this much in such a short time period. I myself was wondering about geographical influences. I notice on my feed that Netvibes has become the most popular reader. On some other Dutch blogs Netvibes is quite popular too, but not as popular as on mine. Still all substantially higher than in the USA. Might this be caused by the fact that it is a French company?

I have tried Netvibes for some time as well, but I think PageFlakes is actually more impressive since it allows you to share your resources more easily.
Interesting to note that Pandia just did a qualitative review of RSS readers. The sentence I liked most was their criticism on Google Reader: "I also often see the Google Labs test tube logo, which is displayed when Google Reader needs some seconds to work on a request." It really drives me mad so now and then. Where they can search billions of webpages in a fraction of seconds, and indicated my personalized results. The same Google can't resolve a few feeds (some 300) in less than seconds..... Otherwise the choice of Rojo and FeedShow seem a bit far off.
